When MBA wins

MBA wins for essentially anyone building today: it is an actively supported product with transparent flat pricing and a free tier, runs first-party inside your store across five platforms, and emits explainable, inspectable co-purchase rules instead of an opaque model from a vendor that has stopped onboarding customers.

When Crossing Minds wins

In its prime, a large enterprise that wanted fully managed, white-glove deep collaborative-filtering personalization (with a dedicated ML engineer and email/SMS personalization) and was willing to pay five figures a year would have gotten more sophisticated black-box modeling than MBA's rules.

FeatureMBACrossing Minds
Product status / availability
Actively developed and accepting new installs across all supported platforms.
Acquihired by OpenAI (June 2025); website states it is no longer accepting new clients, product effectively defunct.
Recommendation modeling approach
Explainable co-purchase mining across six engines (sql_pairs, fp_growth default, seasonal_cohort, return_aware, profit-aware HUI, ai_catalog cold-start), plus a co_occurrence fallback emitting support/confidence/lift.
Proprietary deep collaborative filtering plus semantic graphing with event-triggered model retraining (sophisticated but black-box).
Explainability / inspectability
Every rule is inspectable in-admin with its support, confidence, and lift; you can see exactly why an item was recommended.
Deep-learning model with no per-recommendation rule you can read; insight is via dashboards and attribution.
Platform coverage
One API contract across Shopify, BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Magento, and OroCommerce.
Shopify-focused (Beam app); broader API existed for enterprise but the packaged storefront product was Shopify only.
Pricing transparency
Flat, public pricing: free $0 tier, Plus $99/mo (or ~$79/mo on annual), no GMV or revenue share.
Quote-only enterprise; Beam Shopify tier was about $60,000/year, no free or self-serve option.
Data privacy / hosting
Mining runs first-party inside the merchant install (Magento/Woo); AI is bring-your-own Anthropic/OpenAI key (Oro is a thin hosted client).
Fully hosted SaaS; your event and catalog data is sent to and processed by the vendor's cloud.
Agent / API surface
Public REST API plus a 19-tool MCP server (18 off Shopify) and ACP/agentic-commerce endpoints (agent-native).
Well-documented REST recommendation API, but no MCP or agentic-commerce surface.
Bundles, upsell, and merchandising
Real-SKU bundles with BYOB/volume/BOGO/virtual formats, substitutions, post-purchase upsell, and cart drawer.
Frequently-bought-together bundles, cart/product upsell, plus email and SMS personalization (strength MBA does not match).
A/B testing
Built-in A/B testing reporting lift with confidence intervals.
Built-in A/B testing and real-time business rules included in all plans.
B2B depth
B2B-aware mining on OroCommerce (per-organization context, cross-store insights), reorder-prediction data through the REST API, and a recommendation API for building custom B2B flows.
Marketed B2B as a served industry, but no comparable RFQ/quote-bundle or reorder-prediction tooling surfaced.

Flat, transparent plan pricing: Free ($0) and Plus $99/mo flat (or ~$79/mo on annual). One paid plan, everything in it. These are product plans, not per-platform prices, and the same plans apply across every platform. Metered on capability and compute, never on GMV. No revenue share, no add-ons.

Crossing Minds

Enterprise / quote-only. The Beam Shopify app listed a single tier at roughly $60,000/year with a dedicated ML engineer; no free or self-serve plan. As of mid-2026 the product is defunct: post OpenAI acquihire the company states it is no longer taking new clients.

The honest verdict

1

Reality check first: Crossing Minds was acquihired by OpenAI in June 2025 and stopped taking new clients, so for a new build in 2026 this is not a real option no matter how good the tech once was. Evaluate it as a 'what good looked like' benchmark, not a vendor.

2

Their deep collaborative filtering and semantic graphing were genuinely more sophisticated modeling than MBA's association-rule mining; if you wanted an opaque, fully managed neural recommender and could pay five figures a year, that was the trade.

3

MBA's bet is the opposite and ages better: explainable, inspectable co-purchase rules (support/confidence/lift) you can audit in-admin, instead of a black box you have to trust.

4

Crossing Minds was a hosted, Shopify-centric, quote-only enterprise product; MBA is first-party across five storefronts on one API contract with flat public pricing and a free Woo tier, no GMV or revenue share.

5

MBA is also agent-native (REST + 19-tool MCP (18 tools off Shopify) + ACP) where Crossing Minds offered only a classic REST API; that matters if you are wiring recommendations into AI agents or agentic checkout.
